Rottenmann

If Rottenmann were a book, it’d have thousands of pages – this town has some serious stories to tell. Founded way back in 927, Rottenmann’s look and feel has been shaped by archbishops, salt traders, and even kings over the centuries. Its charming old town is best explored on a guided city tour – lively, informative, and full of little surprises. For those who prefer hiking boots over history books: A hike up to the Mount Stein am Mandl or Rotofen rewards you with breathtaking views of the nearby Gesäuse mountains and the majestic Dachstein range.

About the region

What guests can look forward to

A town that’s been making history for over a thousand years
Rottenmann is old – but definitely not old-fashioned.
First mentioned in documents in the year 927, this little town in the Ennstal valley has seen it all: archbishops, salt traders, even kings came and went.
The narrow alleys and historic buildings still standing today whisper tales from long ago.
If you’re curious about Rottenmann’s rich past, we recommend one of the lively guided city tours – insightful, entertaining, and full of surprising stories.

“Back in summer camp, I once…”
Today, Rottenmann is also known for its Kinder-Akademie (Children’s Academy).
Under the motto “Smart kids in the district”, local and visiting kids get to take part in a three-week summer program featuring over 500 workshops and talks.
Breakdancing, hands-on sessions with the fire brigade, discovering local herbs, or heading out on adventures in Gesäuse National Park – just a few of the many things on offer.
Learning meets fun – and unforgettable memories are guaranteed.

Hiking fun for the whole family
There’s plenty to experience for grown-ups too.
Hikes to the Steinerne Mandl or Rotofen offer deep dives into the untouched and rugged beauty surrounding the town.
If you're in the mood for something more relaxed, stroll along the Pilgrimage Trail of World Religions – where artistically crafted statues line the way – or treat yourself at one of the many cozy inns offering local culinary delights.
